Michael Exley first tasted Karate in 1974 at the Lobley Hill social club at the tender age of 9 but It wasn't until he and his brother Graham began to train under the guidance of Chris Mckenna of the then Gateshead West Karate club (later becoming Kokoro Karate) that his enthusiasm for the art grew, Michael achieved his Black belt at 15 followed by 2nd and 3rd Dans a few years later, during his time representing Gateshead West he won a number of open and national titles in sport karate. qualified for the first ever champion of champions and won a couple of BIKA championships along the way.

Later Michael along with brother Graham started coaching there own club (Bu Bujin Karate) when they moved to the borders town of Berwick upon Tweed, quickly developing a strong competition team and large student base. It was at the Berwick club that Michael first trained with the former world all styles karate champion Jim Collins 6th Dan of the SKF who became a very good friend and frequent visitor to the Berwick clubs.

Graham Exley retired form karate in the late 80's leaving Michael to develop and progress the clubs. Michael was awarded his 4th Dan in the mid 90's ratified by the Scottish Karate Governing Body, 100 fights for charity and coaching awards followed as Michael had students Stephen Crees (who now jointly runs the clubs) represent Scotland in 2 World and 3 European all styles championships and James Murphy of the Duns club who also represented Scotland at international level.

The clubs are members of the Scottish Karate Federation and regularly train with the federations top instructors, Michael still teaches over 6 hours of Karate a week passing on his vast experience in the art of Wado-ryu Karate.
