History of Wado-ryu

The founder of Wado-ryu karate, Hironori Ohtsuka, was born on 1st June 1892 in Shimodate City, Ibaraji Prefecture Japan.

He studied Jujitsu, under the supervision of Shinzaburo Nakayama Sensei, the third Grand Master of the style of Jujitsu that specialised in kicking and punching techniques in addition to throwing, twisting and locking techniques.

Ohtsuka then encountered Okinawan Karate studying advanced techniques and other aspects with Master Funakoshi Sensei. Ohtsuka realized there was a need for a more fluid type of Karate and decided to leave to concentrate on developing his own style, The Birth of Wado-Ryu.

Wado -Karate has grown into one of the biggest participated karate styles in the world and the Bu Bujin Karate Group are proud to be members of one the most successful Wado associations in Europe the Scottish Karate Federation where traditional values of the art are maintained to a standard considered by many as one of the best worldwide.
