The group of clubs were formed in 1982 for the benefit of the local community, the clubs are jointly managed by Michael Exley (4th Dan) and Stephen Crees (3rd Dan) continuing to develop karate in the area and give local people the opportunity to experience a genuine martial art. We teach an internationally practiced Japanese Karate system called Wado-ryu meaning “way of peace school” and the symbol is the dove. Developed by Hironori Ohtsuka combing the best elements in Jujutsu and traditional karate, The style avoids direct confrontation of force against force and relies on speed, timing, agility, evasion and sophisticated body movements, Wado is suited to people of different levels of strength and athletic ability.
Fully qualified and experienced black belt instructors with decades of karate experience will instruct the classes, all instructors are local and developed from within the club(s), all are enhanced PCR checked, regulated by disclosure Scotland, Sports coach UK & First Aid certified, Hold a current SKGB coaching Licence and are registered with the Governing Body for Karate in Scotland & Great Britain.
The clubs are affiliated to the The Scottish Karate Federation founded in 1970, by nine karate students, three of whom are still active members of the SKF, Hamish Adam 8th Dan, Colin Clapperton 8th Dan and Allan Spence 6th Dan. Today the SKF is the largest and most successful karate association in Scotland. The SKF are members of the Scottish Karate Governing Body, the only recognised Governing Body for Karate in Scotland.
In addition to Karate we offer conflict resolution & physical inervention training co-ordinated within our self defence programme within the club.
